Muslims love Jesus! In fact, we follow his name with the invocation "peace be upon him" because Jesus is regarded as one of the many Prophets. Also, there is an entire chapter in the Qur'an devoted to the virgin Mary, in which is detailed the miracle of Jesus' birth and the special abilities awarded to him as an infant. Muslims are required to believe in Jesus, as they are required to believe in Muhammad, Noah, Moses, Solomon, and Abraham - just to name a few (peace be upon them all). This pamphlet is found amongst a plethora of religious text for attendees. (Hamza Masjid)

Prayer in Islam is not only spiritual, but it is also physical. It requires motions of standing, sitting, and bending - built in exercise for Muslims five times per day at the least. In addition, it requires thoughtful concentration and devoted reflection. Muslims follow the instructions of the Imam in harmony, as he recites from the Qur'an.

Mosques make special accommodations for ladies, giving them preferential parking during peak times of attendance. Parking perks make it easier for ladies on the go to offer prayers and carry on with their day without the wait. Who says women are "oppressed" in Islam? We'd like to see these signs more often! “For every problem, there is a solution to be found in the Qur’an. That’s the message I would tell others. People think we have nothing better to do than ‘plot against them’ – that’s just not true. I usually attend a small mosque which is closer to my house. You know, it’s just your average, friendly neighborhood mosque.” We love how our new friend exuded kindness. It’s no wonder her name in Arabic means “to bring people together”. (Hamza Masjid)

Many people are unaware of the important role that charity plays in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the significance of charity in the lives of Muslims towards all creatures - be they humans or animals, non-Muslims or Muslims. In fact, smiling at another being is considered a form of charity in Islam because it brings about good and has the potential to brighten up someone's day - so whether one is young or old, rich or poor, charity is obliged on a Muslim even if it is as simple as offering a kind gesture. This drop box is meant to benefit those in the Houston community who are need of clothing and basic necessities. (Hamza Masjid)

Attendees often come to the mosque to offer individual prayers in addition to attending prayer in congregation. There is a difference between being lonely and seeking solitude. The former is felt when one craves the attention of people – therefore loneliness stems from a feeling of isolation or abandonment by others. However, solitude is a feeling that is sought when one craves the attention of his/her Creator. Islam is unique in this regard because there is no intermediary between a woman/man and God. If you’d like to speak to God, it’s as simple as remembering Him in moments of solitude. (Hamza Masjid)

"We really want everyone to know that Islam means 'Peace' so that's why we want to hold up a peace sign. We want people to know that Muslims are peaceful people. When are you going to post this so we can see?"

In order to accommodate the growing congregation in Houston, this mosque built an additional section upstairs. Not only does it provide more space for attendees, it also doubles as a great viewing space to watch the sunset. It is also adjacent to a residential area and residents from the complex nearby can be seen playing basketball at the court of the mosque, as all are welcome to attend. (Hamza Masjid)

Humans tend to create divisions among ourselves; however, the Islamic prayer is meant to rectify this predilection. Whether an individual is a surgeon by profession or a store clerk; he/she must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the person standing beside them. All racial, social, and egotistical divisions must be set aside during prayer because Muslims believe that we are all equal before God. This emphasizes the importance of unity and brother/sisterhood in Islam because as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, “All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab , nor a non-Arab has superiority over an Arab. Also a White person has no superiority over a Black person, nor does a Black person have any superiority over a White person – except by piety and good action (Tirmidihi). By praying beside one another, we learn the importance of embracing our differences and uniting for the purpose to bring about good into society – thereby placing love in our hearts for the diversity Islam welcomes. This little lady brought some crayons and a coloring book to keep herself occupied while her mother and grandmother offered their prayers. She was an expert at distracting others with her adorable antics and over-sized headscarf!
